Project Name: Aircraft Sunshelters Repair
Project Location: Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi
Project Owner: U.S. Corp Of Engineers—Mobile
Contract Value: $4,467,794.00
Completed: July 2018
Columbus AFB is home to the largest Air Force pilot training facility in the US. This project addressed much needed repairs for 15 sunshelters that ranged from size from 40-55 ft wide x 385-577 ft long (each shelter large enough to accommodate many aircraft including T-6, T-1A, and T-38). Work included repairs and re-welding of arched tube supports, pressure washing, sanding and painting of the supports, removal of the old weathered fabric roofs that had turned green with age, replacement with new white fabric, and replacement of all existing lightning protection.
Work was conducted in 14 phases whereby aircraft were moved from shelter to shelter as each shelter was repaired, one at a time. This required close coordination with minimum 24-hour notices required for aircraft relocation.
