Project Name: Construct TEC Dormitory and Classrooms
Project Location: McGhee Tyson ANG, TN
Project Owner: Tennessee Air National Guard
Contract Value: $16,626,509
Completed: December 2016
The TEC Dormitories and Classroom project is a new construction of 46,871 SF of administrative, classroom and dormitory space for the 134th TN Air National Guard. Due to the limited staging area, the building was designed linearly and constructed from the inside out. The facility is flanked by existing dormitories and educational facilities and designed with similar materials and colors for a compatible look. This project received the United States Air Force 2018 Merit Award for Design.
The project was a centerpiece construction that required complex scheduling to accommodate a difficult site plan and unanticipated weather delays. Facilities contain open office, conference and meeting rooms, building communications cabling, HVAC systems, fire alarm systems and added 12 flexible classrooms to the educational complex, each equipped with retractable walls allowing for additional configurations. Classrooms can convert from a large instructional space to small pivotal classrooms.
The “state of the art” training facility included the construction of one 2-story classroom facility and two 3-story dormitories on a reinforced concrete foundation and concrete floor slab, steel frame, masonry and concrete walls, metal insulated panels, and brick veneer exterior finish with sloped metal roof, interior partition walls, HVAC systems, communications wiring, restrooms, millwork, utilities, access pavement, fire protection/detection, fire suppression, site work, antiterrorism force protection measures, erosion control, drainage structures and landscape and utility connections to existing infrastructure.
The project required construction compliance to United States Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED® Silver certification level.
